Buy or Rent Aluminium Scaffolding – Calculation and Decision Guide

Renting scaffolding costs €12–28 per day. When does buying your own make more sense? We walk through a simple break-even calculation and the pros and cons of both.

==================

When planning work at height, you face a practical question: does it make sense to buy scaffolding outright, or to hire it each time you need it? The answer depends on how often you need it, what type you need, and how you value factors such as availability, documentation, and flexibility.

This article walks you through both the financial calculation and the practical considerations, so you can make the right decision for your specific situation.

How Does Scaffolding Rental Work?

Mobile aluminium scaffold tower rental is offered by tool hire companies, construction equipment leasing firms, and some specialist dealers. Daily rates typically range from €12 to €28 per day depending on the type and height of the tower, location, and the length of the hire period.

For longer hire periods (a week or a month), rates are often significantly lower — for example €6–12 per day.

However, the indirect costs of rental also need to be factored in:

  • Transport: collecting and returning the scaffold, or a delivery charge
  • Time: scheduling availability, rental administration
  • Risk of unavailability: during peak season (spring, summer) the right model may not be available
  • Liability: if the rented scaffold is damaged, you bear responsibility for the cost
  • Documentation: the hire company may not provide a Declaration of Performance in your language for your audit requirements

Purchase Price of Your Own Scaffolding

Indicative purchase prices for mobile aluminium scaffold towers (depending on configuration and height):

Basic configuration up to 4 m working height: approximately €600–1,200 Mid-range configuration up to 6–8 m: approximately €1,200–2,400 Taller industrial configuration up to 10–12 m: approximately €2,400–4,800

These prices include a complete assembly with accessories (outriggers, guardrails, platform decking), Declaration of Performance, and documentation.

Simple Break-Even Calculation

The break-even point is the number of hire days after which buying outright becomes more economical than repeated rental.

Calculation: Break-even (days) = Purchase price / Daily hire rate

Examples:

Configuration costing €1,600, hire rate €20/day: Break-even = 1,600 / 20 = 80 hire days

Configuration costing €1,000, hire rate €16/day: Break-even = 1,000 / 16 = 63 hire days

Configuration costing €2,800, hire rate €24/day: Break-even = 2,800 / 24 = 117 hire days

How to read this: if in a year you need the scaffolding for fewer days than the break-even number (80 days in the first example), rental is more economical. If you need it for more days per year — or if you will need it again next year — buying makes sense.

Important note: this calculation covers only direct financial costs. It does not include the value of availability, time savings, convenience, or documentation and audit costs, which can significantly influence the decision.

Advantages of Buying Your Own Scaffolding

Always available Your own scaffolding is available exactly when you need it. You are not dependent on hire company availability, do not need to schedule collection and return, and do not lose work because the scaffold was already booked out.

Complete documentation Every ALUBERG and COSMOS scaffold we supply comes with a Declaration of Performance, certification, and a user manual. This documentation is yours for the entire service life of the product — no need to track it down or request it from a hire company.

Warranty and service A new scaffold comes with the manufacturer's warranty. We supply spare parts for the full range. A hired product carries no warranty for you — and you may not detect defects in time.

Ability to customise Your own scaffold can be fitted with exactly the accessories you need — outriggers, levelling feet, larger castors, FIBRA components for work near live electrical equipment. With a hired product you take what is available.

Tax depreciation Aluminium scaffolding as a business asset can be depreciated for tax purposes. Depending on your accounting situation, this may be a relevant factor.

Disadvantages of Buying Your Own Scaffolding

Higher upfront investment The purchase price of scaffolding is a one-off expenditure that needs to fit the budget. This can be a constraint for smaller companies or sole traders with variable workloads.

Storage requirement Scaffolding takes up space in a warehouse or garage. For businesses without suitable storage, this is a practical problem — particularly for larger configurations.

Responsibility for maintenance and inspections Your own scaffolding requires regular inspection (minimum once a year) and any necessary repairs. This responsibility cannot be transferred to a hire company.

Financial risk at low utilisation If you need scaffolding only occasionally — for example once a year to paint a building — the investment will probably not pay off.

When to Buy Outright

  • You use scaffolding for at least 30–40 days per year
  • You operate in a regulated industrial environment where you need your own documentation for audits
  • You need scaffolding available immediately and at irregular times
  • You have a stable warehouse or premises where the scaffolding can be stored
  • Your work requires specific accessories or configurations that are not available in the standard hire fleet

When to Consider Renting

  • You need scaffolding only occasionally (fewer than 15–20 days per year)
  • This is a one-off project (a renovation, a single contract)
  • You have no suitable storage
  • You want to try different heights or types before committing to a purchase
  • The budget does not allow a one-off investment, but regular hire payments are manageable

Conclusion and Recommendation

For most professional users — sole traders, building contractors, industrial facilities, and service technicians — buying their own scaffolding pays off within one to three years. For occasional users, rental is the more economical choice.
