Telescopic Ladder With Platform vs. Stairway Platform – Comparison

TeleGemma or stairway platform? We compare both types by height, space, frequency of use and number of users to help you make the right choice.

===================

Within the COSMOS access system range, two product types appear at first glance to serve the same purpose — enabling one or two people to work at height without assembling a modular scaffold tower. Yet the situations in which they are the right choice are quite different.

The first type is the telescopic ladder with platform — products such as the TeleGemma Air or Super TeleGemma. The second is the classic stairway platform — for example the Orsa Maggiore or Palco Comfort. Both types are aluminium, certified, and designed for work at height. The difference lies in how they are deployed, how they function, and who they are best suited to.

What Is a Telescopic Ladder With Platform?

A telescopic ladder with platform is essentially a ladder with an integrated working platform at the top and a protective guardrail system. The telescopic mechanism allows the platform height to be adjusted continuously across a wide range — without needing to change the product.

Models available from COSMOS:

TeleGemma Air A compact telescopic version for indoor work. The platform is adjustable across a defined height range (depending on the specific configuration), the product is lightweight and easily portable. Certified to EN 131-7. Designed for one person.

Super TeleGemma A more robust version with a larger platform and greater maximum reach. Suitable for more demanding indoor and outdoor applications. Certified to EN 131-7 with a 360° containment system. Designed for one person.

Key characteristics of a telescopic ladder with platform:

  • Adjustable platform height — one product, multiple working heights
  • Compact when folded — easy to transport and store
  • Fast deployment and fast adjustment to a different height
  • Smaller working area (model-dependent)
  • Typically for one person
  • Certified to EN 131-7

What Is a Stairway Platform?

A stairway platform is an integrated structure with fixed steps or treads, a larger working platform, and a robust guardrail system. The working height is fixed — it cannot be changed without replacing the product. This is compensated by greater stability, a more spacious platform, and higher load capacity.

Models available from COSMOS:

Orsa Maggiore A mid-range stairway platform for indoor work and lighter outdoor applications. Larger working area than a telescopic ladder, fixed height, certified to EN 131-7.

Palco Comfort A taller and more spacious stairway platform, suited to industrial and commercial use. Comfortable steps with a generous tread angle, robust guardrail system, with a two-person configuration available on selected models.

Key characteristics of a stairway platform:

  • Fixed platform height — cannot be changed
  • Larger and more stable working area
  • More comfortable access via steps (rather than ladder rungs)
  • Higher load capacity (model-dependent)
  • Two-person use available on selected models
  • Certified to EN 131-7 or EN 14183

Key Differences at a Glance

  • TeleGemma: typically lower
  • Stairway platform: typically higher

When to Choose TeleGemma (Telescopic Ladder With Platform)?

Your working height changes. If in the course of a single day you work at different heights — for example installing lighting in rooms with different ceiling heights — the telescopic platform allows fast adjustment without changing products. This is its principal advantage.

You need to transport the product in your car every day. The TeleGemma folds down to a compact size and is light enough to fit in a car boot without dismantling. If you work at multiple locations each day, portability is critical.

You work alone and materials are light. For a single operator with hand tools, the smaller platform is entirely adequate. There is no need to pay for a more spacious product.

Your working heights fall within the TeleGemma range. The TeleGemma Air covers lower heights; the Super TeleGemma reaches higher. If your scenario fits within these models' range, there is no need to move to a stairway platform.

Storage or floor space is limited. A folded TeleGemma takes up significantly less space than a stairway platform.

When to Choose a Stairway Platform (Orsa Maggiore, Palco Comfort)?

Your working height is constant and well defined. If you know you will always work at the same height — for example during routine maintenance of lighting in a warehouse with a consistent ceiling height — a fixed platform height is not a disadvantage but a simplification.

You need a larger working area. Work involving larger tools, materials, or a colleague requires a more spacious platform. Stairway platforms offer significantly more working area than telescopic ladders.

Step access is safer or more comfortable. For older workers, in operations where people step onto the platform carrying tools, or wherever ergonomics of access matter, steps are considerably more comfortable than ladder rungs.

Two people will work on the platform. Selected Palco Comfort models are certified for two users. TeleGemma is always a single-user product.

The product will remain in one location for an extended period. If the platform is not moved every few minutes but is worked from for hours or days at a single location, the comfort and stability of a stairway platform justify the investment.

How to Decide — 3 Key Questions

  • Does my working height change, or is it constant? → It changes → TeleGemma → It is constant → stairway platform
  • Am I working alone, or will two people be on the platform? → Alone → TeleGemma or stairway platform (depending on other factors) → Two people → Palco Comfort or similar stairway platform
  • Do I need to transport the product in my car every day? → Yes → TeleGemma → No → both options are worth considering
