COSMOS Marte S vs. Marte L – Which Model to Choose and Why

The COSMOS Marte range of mobile scaffold towers is among the most thoroughly engineered products of its kind on the European market. The towers are manufactured by the Italian company COSMOS s.n.c., in production since 1984, and their construction complies with the standard UNI EN 1004-1/-2:2021 in load class 3.

The Marte range comes in two fundamental variants: Marte S (narrow) and Marte L (wide). Both models are available in a range of height configurations. The wide version also exists as Marte Comfort with internal stairs. If you are unsure which variant suits your operation, this article will make the decision straightforward.

The Primary Parameter: Width as the Starting Point

The most important distinguishing parameter is the frame width – and consequently the working platform width:

• Marte S: internal frame width 0.74 m (working platform approximately 0.74 m)
• Marte L: internal frame width 1.35 m (working platform approximately 1.35 m)

The platform length is 2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 m for both variants.

This width directly determines:

• Whether the tower will pass through a standard doorway
• How many people can work comfortably on the platform simultaneously
• The maximum height achievable in a given configuration
• How easily the tower can be manoeuvred in confined spaces

Marte S – Narrow Variant

Marte S is designed for use in spaces where width is a constraint, or for situations where one person works alone and platform spaciousness is not the priority.

• Platform width: 0.74 m
• Platform length: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.0 m
• Load class: 3 (200 kg/m²)
• Platform height: 0.55–9.55 m, working height 2.55–11.55 m (16 height configurations per the manufacturer's catalogue)
• Certification: UNI EN 1004-1/-2:2021

ServoTech: safe guardrail assembly on both models. ServoTech is a COSMOS assembly tool. It lets the installer fit and remove the top-level guardrails while standing on the platform below (EN 1004-1), so they only step onto the top platform once it is protected on all sides.

According to the COSMOS catalogue, both Marte S and Marte L have the ServoTech system, so ServoTech is not a reason to choose one model over the other. We will specify the ServoTech supply for a particular configuration in our quotation. The castors on both models have a standard parking brake.

When to choose Marte S:

• You need to pass through a doorway (we will check clearance for your doors against the configuration)
• You work in narrow corridors, lift shafts, or confined spaces
• One person works on the platform
• Residential or office environments where space is limited

Marte L – Standard (Wide) Variant

Marte L offers a substantially larger working platform and is designed for situations where comfort, load capacity, and the ability to accommodate two people matter more than clearance through narrow spaces.

• Platform length: 2.0 / 2.5 / 3.0 m
• Load class: 3 (200 kg/m²)
• Platform height: 0.59–11.99 m, working height 2.59–13.99 m (20 height configurations per the manufacturer's catalogue)

With a 2.0 m platform, the working area of Marte L (1.35 × 2.0 m = 2.70 m²) is almost double that of Marte S (0.74 × 2.0 m = 1.48 m²). The practical difference in working comfort is significant.

When to choose Marte L:

• Two people work on the platform simultaneously
• You need more space for tools, materials, or movement
• You work in industrial buildings or on façades where width is not a constraint
• You need taller configurations (Marte L reaches greater heights in standard assemblies)
• Industrial operations with daily intensive use

Comfort Version – What Does It Add?

The Comfort version is a separate model, Marte Comfort. It is made only in the 1.35 m width, i.e. as an alternative to Marte L, with a working height of 4.39–13.99 m. Compared with Marte L it adds:

Safe Parapets: the guardrails are fitted and removed from the level below, so the worker steps onto a platform that is already protected.

Internal stairs instead of a ladder: a 45° staircase with 100 mm treads lets you climb up and down with one hand free (per the manufacturer's catalogue).

We recommend the Comfort version for industrial operations where the scaffold is used by multiple users in rotation, and for situations where the speed and intuitiveness of safety features are critical.
